This paper was written for FTV 200: Bibliography & Methods of Research in Film & Television and emerged from my interest in the eclectic Los Angeles avant-garde film culture of the ‘70s, and its intersection with radical social movements in the city such as the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. By examining various archival sources from the East LA Chicano art group Asco, this paper addresses how these individuals complicated ‘70s Chicano-youth identity politics with their art, and why their films in particular were marginalized and rejected by both the Chicano community and emerging Chicano Filmmakers, as well as by other established avant-garde art communities in Los Angeles.
